Hi Arden! My 2 cents: a hybrid between 1 and 3, where the middleground (cliff on left and tower on right are mostly dark, but not pitch black, and more in the shadow because the main light source would be coming from behind), but make the dragon a brighter (not bright, but more like a mid-to dark gray value) so he cuts out nicely from the middleground. The background is just right (paled out). To help the dragon in the foreground gain more attention, give it more saturated touches (especially if he has a mild value contrast). Run with it!! Any color studies?
